Giving Bad Advice Essay My cousin Madison turned 14 years old last year and I visit her, my aunt and uncle on a weekly basis. I like it there better because, like myself, they would rather take a trip to the beautiful mountains to ski, or go to the beach to catch big waves rather than stay home watching T. V. As a kid, my family traveled whenever they got the chance because my mom worked for a travel agency and received great discounts. Our family took trips to great places such as beautiful San Francisco and Las Vegas. When the economy plummeted, my parents lost their jobs and couldn’t afford to anymore. My Dad hates to spend money so we don’t go anywhere that revolves around that subject. My Aunt loves to take vacations which is something that is always enjoyable because being at home can get quite boring. The down side of going over my Aunts house is that my little cousin and I bicker and argue constantly because she seems to always think she’s right and that the world is all sunshine and rainbows. We do get along most of the time and but have our moments from time to time and that is a fact of life, I don’t mind dealing with it when I have to. This past year we traveled to many places, such as Universal Studios and the beach, but since it’s the time of year where the beautiful white snow we love comes falling down from those great big snow clouds, we took a trip to the mountains and went skiing. Skiing is one of our favorite things to do when winter comes around. I am getting better at it every year we go. My Dad taught me how to ski as a kid and since then I have been skiing as long as I can remember. On the way to Massanutten ski resort, my excitement was as high as it could be since we haven’t been in years. My cousin Madison is still a beginner and doesn’t like to listen to anyone who tries to give her advice on how to get better and eventually go to the bigger slopes. She always skied with her Dad because he likes to go down the easy and slow hills with her and lets her do her thing without him talking and messing up her focus. The greater and lengthier slopes are a lot more exciting than the bunny hills so I tried to convince Madison to go with us to the bigger hills. She knew that she could do it but the fear grew inside her head. It was very hard and frustrating to get her to overcome her fear. When Madison finally decided to face her fear and come over to the bigger slopes, we all went up on the lift to the top. At the top she seemed a little scared but she had everyone there with her assuring she would be safe and sound. We started skiing down and it appeared as if she forgot everything she was taught. She fell over and her skis came off and she seemed shaken up about it. I skied down to her and tried to give her the best advice possible on how to get up, put the skis on and the best route to take the rest of the way down the slope. Since she didn’t like to listen to anyone that isn’t a ski instructor, so she wouldn’t get up the way I taught her to. Antomical Dead Space and Frc Paper Anatomical dead space and functional residual capacity (FRC) play a very important role to ensure the constancy of alveolar gas tensions. Firstly it is important to understand what the anatomical dead space and FRC actually are. The anatomical dead space refers to the gas in the conducting areas of the respiratory system where air does not come into contact with alveoli. Examples of places in the respiratory system where anatomical dead space is present are the mouth and trachea. The functional residual capacity is the amount of air that remains in the lungs after a normal and passive expiration. It is usually measured at approximately 2. 5 litres of air. Both the FRC and the anatomical dead space are essential in maintaining the constancy of alveolar gas tensions. To highlight there importance, it would be very useful to imagine the situation within the respiratory tract if they were not present. The consequence of these two factors not being present means that the inspired air would be equal to the normal tidal volume and the lungs would completely empty on expiration. This would mean that the air breathed in would equilibrate itself with the blood flowing in the lungs. Hence the pCO2 and pO2 levels in the blood flowing out of the lungs would have equilibrated itself with the gas tensions in the inspired air. Then when expiration takes place, no gas is present in the lungs as it has completely emptied itself. The effects of this are that on inspiration, diffusion would take place in between the inspired air and the blood. Due to this the blood pO2 levels would become atmospheric. Hence according to these calculations, only 350ml of fresh air reaches the lungs. Hence as the FRC is 2. 5 litres, fluctuations of 350ml don’t cause any major changes in the pCO2 and pO2 concentrations. They thus stay constant at around 13 Kpa of O2 and 5 Kpa of Co2 and hence drastic fluctuations in gas concentrations are avoided. The dead space also prevents infection and warms up incoming air. Due to the FRC and anatomical dead space being present, constant conditions are provided which allow our body to function optimally. Even though we know the importance of FRC and anatomical dead space, it is essential to measure them. There are two main techniques used for their measurement. Anatomical dead space is measured using the Fowler’s method which is also known as the nitrogen washout method. The FRC is measured using the helium dilution technique. The lover, this is the stage where he has a mistress and falls in love with her, while he tries to sing her a song he can’t look into her eyes because he’s so shy. The soldier is when he tries to keep his reputation thinking less of himself and more of others, and always being ready to fight. The justice stage is where he has gained wisdom and prosperity by the many experiences he had in life. The old age stage is when he begins to lose his charm physically and mentally, he also loses his firmness and personality. Finally, physical and mental lose and death, he begins to become dependent on others like a child and needs constant help from others to perform any tasks; he slowly loses his teeth, eyesight, and taste, until he finally dies. Tone The tone in this poem in my opinion is that William Shakespeare feels as if everyone ends up the way people do just because we all go through life as if we were actors on a stage reading a script knowing every step to take till the very end. He is accepting of death, he knows that everyone goes through every single stage of life assuming they know what do to do next, but no one really does. I came to this conclusion because Shakespeare shows no type of anger or excitement throughout the poem. He is neutral; he is neither afraid of death nor excited about it. He feels as if everyone has a purpose in life and to find that purpose you have to go through every stage. It doesn’t matter how confident you are, how hard you try, or how fast you get through each stage, everyone will always end the same way, dying. Shakespeare knows you cannot skip this part of life no matter who you are. One can only enjoy the time you have and wait for your time to come. In line 7-9 one can visualize a little boy in the morning, tired and very slowly dragging himself to school with his satchel, when he says â€Å"the whining schoolboy, with his satchel and shining morning face, creeping like a snail unwillingly to school. † Another sense of strong imagery is in line 5-6, when he says â€Å"at first, the infant, mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. † In this line one can easily picture a nurse holding a baby who just came into this world for the first time, whining, squirming, and puking in her arms. In line 9-11 William Shakespeare says â€Å"the lover sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress’ eyebrow. † Here he explains that the lover wrote his mistress a song like poem to express his love to her, but his too shy to look her in the eyes while he sings to her. Sound Sound is a very big part of this poem, because he uses a specific structure, some rhyme and repetition. The structure of this poem is very important because each stage is in order. He goes from infant, to schoolboy, to lover, to soldier, to justice, to old age, and finally death. For one’s life to start you must be born into this world as an infant; then you slowly grow into a schoolboy, become a lover and then a soldier trying to keep your reputation. You gain wisdom and justice and then you grow into old age where you lose your appearance physically and mentally. Lastly you become dependent on others and eventually your life is over. This poem also has some rhyme in it but not much. You will not find rhyme in the same line. In line 7 he uses the word â€Å"whining† and in line 8 he uses the word â€Å"shining† to describe the schoolboy, which both words rhyme with each other. He doesn’t feel the need to have to rhyme so much in this poem for one to fully understand the metaphor he is conveying. He also uses repetition in the last line of the poem. As he says â€Å"sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything† he repeats â€Å"sans† to let you know he has lost his teeth, eyes, taste, everything as he dies. Theme The theme to â€Å"All the World’s a Stage† in my opinion is live life to the fullest with no regrets. Everyone should have their own life, and do their own thing. No one should have the same routine every single day, that’s boring. Be spontaneous, do things you’d never imagine doing. You’d be surprised at the many things one can do in this world at any age; we just have to be willing to leave our comfort zone and let loose. One should not let another person take over their life for any reason. We should have control of it, and be able to do what we want when we want, and not have to ask for permission. Not everyone goes through each stage of life at the same time, it shouldn’t matter how old one is. One should always have time to laugh and have a good time at any time no matter what. In this poem it is very clear that William Shakespeare wants you to understand how one goes through life. One usually goes through life making choices behind choices, living off your decisions and its consequences. We each have our own routine we follow day by day, even if we don’t always notice it. It’s as if were a character in a play and we follow a script we memorize every day, until something unexpected happens and our role changes. We have to accommodate the new situation into our schedule and try to make it work. We also have time to squeeze in some fun and live. The company later sold it to Mynheer Paauw who also bought land along the New Jersey coastline. Samuel Ellis, a colonial merchant bought the island and it became at last Ellis Island. After the Revolution, the island was sold to New York State and in 1811, Fort Gibson was built on it in preparation for the War of 1812. No fighting took place at Fort Gibson it was mainly a munitions storage fort. When immigrants began, pouring into New York City, New York State processed them at an old fort known as Castle Clinton on the Battery at the tip of Manhattan. When that facility became too small for the large number of immigrants arriving in the country, they chose Ellis Island as the new immigration center. After erecting new wooden buildings, it opened in 1892 but those buildings burned in 1897. New buildings were erected in 1900 and it reopened. Eventually the control of immigration was turned over to the Federal government. Ellis Island was the principal federal immigration station the â€Å"Gateway to America† in the United States from 1892 to 1954. More than 12 million immigrants were processed here. Over time, the immigration station spread over 3 connected islands with numerous structures including a hospital and contagious disease wards. It is estimated that over 40 percent of all citizens can trace their ancestry to those who came through Ellis Island. In its early years, when the greatest number of immigrants entered the country, Ellis Island mirrored the nation's generous attitude and open door policy. After passage of immigration laws in the 1920s, it was used more for "assembly, detainment, and deporting aliens," and symbolized a closing door. Immigrants were required to pass a series of medical and legal inspections before they could enter America.
